The event will spotlight standout middle and high school student-athletes selected by Douglas County School District’s coaches and administrators for their achievements in the classroom and in their respective sport(s).

This year’s alumni honoree is gold medalist, McDonald’s High School All-American, former Naismith candidate, prominent Duke University basketball player, and ThunderRidge High School star, Abby Waner. Keynote speaker Carol Callan is the Assistant Executive Director responsible for all USA Basketball women’s team programs, competitions, trials, and training camps. She orchestrated the historic, first-time National Team program and has been involved with USA Basketball since 1992. Mrs. Callan is a 2006 Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) Hall of Fame inductee.

This special celebration is held in conjunction with the 24th Annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD). NGWSD is a day devoted to “acknowledging the past accomplishments of female athletes and recognizing current sports achievements, the positive influence of sports participation, and the continuing struggle for equality and access for women in sports.”

- 135 female student athletes, one inspiring speaker, two hours. The Douglas County Educational Foundation (DCEF) and the Douglas County School District (DCSD) will celebrate Douglas County Girls and Women in Sports at a luncheon on Friday, January 22, 2010.

The Douglas County Educational Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization created in June 1990, to develop private resources to enrich education within Douglas County schools for the fulfillment of lifelong learning experiences of our students, citizens and community.
